One of my favorite photos. Ryan Dunn at the Troc in Philly 2000? Bam called me from the show saying Dunn was going to jump off the 3rd floor balcony. I was in the suburbs. Somehow I managed to drive to the city, get a parking spot out front. Somehow get into the show with a photo pass (back in the day it was really hard to get in to shows without a pass) I ran up the stairs and pulled my camera out and stuck on the flash as Ryan got on to the railing and just pointed the camera in his direction as he jumped without having time to even look at the camera settings. Totally lucky. Ryan didn't actually jump from the 3rd floor but off the 2nd floor. I don't know how he did this to look like he is falling from higher. Bam did the same thing. Security was chasing him and they grabbed his jacket and he just jumped without even looking down. I need to find that shot. It was in his Big Brother magazine interview.

Weird lady down the street

I was driving down my street tonight and this weird old lady I always see walked straight into my car. I didn't hit her but she jumped back and spilled all her groceries in the snow. I parked and helped pick them up. It was nothing but a bunch of onions and lemon juice. I asked her what she was doing with so many onions and lemon juice and she told me come come inside her house but I told her I was in a rush. She said, she had a Chinese Dragon for me so I couldn't resist. I mean, who would pass up a Chinese Dragon?? Well anyways, we go inside and the lights were off and she told me to wait a minute. About 3 minutes later, which is a LONG time standing in the dark, the lights came on. I stood there in disbelief waiting for her to appear again. She didn't. I waited still looking around until I mustered up the courage to snoop at all the stuff in her place. About 5 minutes later, she still didn't appear from where ever she went so I figured I should shoot some photos. Well here they are. I was there for about 20 minutes when I figured I should leave. On my way out, she said, "Don't forget the dragon!!" and there it was. The second I picked it up, the lights went out again and so did I!! She said she knew I took photos but I was to never reveal where I was. I imagine this story to be fact!!!

MAGIC FUN SHOP PHOTOS AT MISHKA!

As Adam Wallacavage recounts, Magic Fun Shop was a dusty mosoleum of a relic shop commandeered by an owner who looked like Rip Van Winkle awakening from a 100 year nap. Situated on the North side of Philladelphia, Wallacavage discovered the novelty shop by chance in 1995. Over the course of the next 10 years, he befriended the shop owner and slowly amassed a personal collection of vintage masks and 1960's adult gag toys that o...nce called Magic Fun Shop home. During this ten year "Twilight Zone" span, Wallacavage documented his findings through a series of photographs until Magic Fun Spot mysteriously closed it's doors for good in 2005.

Mishka is proud to host a series of Wallacavage's documentation over this period at 350 Broadway. The show - aptly titled Photos From the Magic Fun Spot - boasts a library's worth of photographs spanning Wallacavage's fascination and interaction with Philladelphia's hidden novelty shop. A number of relics and gag-toys will also be on display. Photos From the Magic Fun Shop will run for six weeks starting with an opening party at 350 Broadway on July 23rd. A limited edition t-shirt including various prints will be available for sale at 350 Broadway.

About The Artist

Inspired by an obsession with the ocean and a fascination with extravagant interiors of old churches, Adam Wallacavage transformed the dining room of his South Philadelphia Victorian Brownstone into something from the pages of a Jules Verne novel. Teaching himself the ancient art of ornamental plastering, Adam evolved his new found skills into making plaster cast octopus shaped chandeliers as the final touch to his underwater themed room. His first showing at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery in June of 2006 featured a pink-glitter octopus chandalier adorned with pearls from famed jewelry designer, Tarina Tarantino.

Beyond making chandeliers, Adam Wallacavage is also an accomplished photographer, documenting artists, musicians, daredevils and all things weird and wonderful. His first book, Monster Size Monsters, was released in August of 2006 through Gingko Press and spans fifteen years of his photography.

Adam Wallacavage, a founding member of the Space 1026 Collective in Philadelphia, has long documented skateboarding and the underground art scene. His curiculum vitae includes shooting for various skateboard magazines in the early 1990’s including Thrasher, Slap and Skateboard Mag and transisitioning to underground-art publications like Juxtapoz and Shepard Fairey’s, Swindle Magazine.

Adam’s approach as a photographer was born of the need to set up and break down his equipment very quickly—a necessity for his early assignments that required shooting skateboarders in dodgy or illegal locations. His signature trait as a photographer is his eclectic choice of bizarre subject matter, which celebrates the neglected, the marginal, and the ridiculous. His subject matter spans everything from the mundane to the bizarre; “alien” spacesuits made out of lint, zippers show on monster outfits, and chariots with ATV off-road tires are only a few of Adam's realized ideas.

Quick Visit to Tara McPherson's Studio

So, a couple Weeks ago, I went up to NYC to get some art supplies, to drop off my friend Bridgette, and to help my friend John find the lost Tough Shit's Van that disappeared after their last Brooklyn show. While John was meeting with the NYPD, Bridgette and I made a visit to our favorite friend, the most wonderful, Tara McPherson.

Tara had just finished this painting that is going in a group show at the Warhol museum in Pittsburgh, Pa.

I love the way Tara paints. I always ask her is she doodles and such but she really doesn't. It seems to me she keeps most of her ideas in her head then does a sketch and just explodes her images right on to the canvas.

Tara was waiting for the varnish to dry so she could bring it to be photographed. That's the perfect time to do a studio visit.

Steve Powers Love Leters book signing

Last night Steve Powers had an opening and book signing at a sort of pop up gallery in Philadelphia at 1226 Chestnut Street. It's something of a replica of the sign store/hang out/headquarters for the Love Letters project in West Philly.

We got almost 4 feet of snow in the past week. That is really true, look it up if you don't believe me. Click here It's a coincidence he named this ICY, well I think it is, maybe not. Look at the rest of this cause this post is taking me a long time to write

I shot these photos with a Canon G-11 I'm posting this fuzzy photo because I think this camera is lousy!!! I dropped my Panasonic Lumix LX3 off a roof while documenting the Love Letters and while it still worked, I needed a replacement and and it was out of stock so I got the G-11 instead and it's just not as good. Sorry, but it's not and if the owners of Panasonic are reading this, you should sponsor me!!!

I know at least ten artists named Adam. When I was young, I met an Adam who could do skate vert ramps, and then he’d hop down and shoot pictures for national skate magazines. There was another guy who would create these amazing zines and t-shirts. A few years later another Adam popped up who did these awesome screen prints of old toys and monsters.

It didn’t hit me then, but after college when an Adam rolled into SPACE1026 and hand painted the gallery’s tin walls and ceiling, I started to realize that the name Adam must be some kind of element in the development of creative people.

I also know an Adam sculptor, an Adam who does strange animal inspired chandeliers, an Adam who alters taxidermy animals as art, and an Adam interior designer. It’s scary and enlightening that if you name a person Adam, chances are you’ll get a creative person on the other end.

Bat Chandeliers of the day

So, I'm working on some new chandeliers for the 5 year anniversary group show at Jonathan LeVine gallery next month and I wanted to make something new. I wanted to make something that felt like a jellyfish/icicle thing and I didn't know what I was doing but I ended up sculpting these weird bat wings instead. I looked up "Bat Chandeliers" to see is anyone made anything like I'm making and so far I'm in the clear!!

Annakim Violette

This is my friend, Annakim. I met her through Kime Buzelli Whom I had just photographed for a Closet Cases shoot for Swindle which never ran. I asked her for suggestions of any one else she knew with interesting collections and She said her friend, Annakim would be perfect to photograph and upon meeting her, I knew how right she was.

Meeting Annakim was funny. I love meeting people whom I share a similar aesthetic, however, we were only had about 40 mins for the shoot. We had to talk to each other really fast, which ended up in us talking in broken paragraphs starting stories about things and stuff and not finishing any of them. I really don't remember anything we talked about and I doubt she does either.

I just noticed this pink stole, I wonder if it's the one I almost bought at Necromance on Melrose?

Sorry, I can't help myself. I'm under her spell

This was when Bam had the tv show and he had Slayer play in his backyard on a full on huge stage. I couldn't believe they let shoot photos of them on the stage! It was so weird, but awesome. Walking around on stage while Slayer is playing!!!
